Professional Development

Mid Sussex Active operate a comprehensive CPD programme to help schools effectively utilise their PE and Sport Premium funding. Our aims are to develop PE and sport in both the curriculum and as part of whole school improvement.  We want to help schools achieve sustainable development of PE and sport ensuring it has a positive impact on all children.  The training opportunities are perfectly suited to achieving a mix of short and long-term impact on the teaching and learning in your school. They can be suitable for Governors, Headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants and even parent volunteers.  Courses are written for teachers by teachers.

I thoroughly enjoyed attending the Athletics CPD. The trainer was very knowledgeable and made the sessions good fun. I learnt lots of new game ideas and about how to effectively keep all the children engaged during activities.

▬ Support Staff (1st Steps Athletics)

Thank you for such a great day! I feel much more confident now and am actually excited about teaching gymnastics – the first time I have felt like that in 3.5 yrs of teaching.

▬ Teacher (1st Steps Gym)

I really enjoyed the practical experience of getting a feel of how the children will feel when tackling a new challenge and learning practical activities to take straight back to school.

▬ Teacher (Outdoor & Adventurous Activities)

I found the whole course useful – it really improved my confidence and inspired me to start using some of the warm ups we learnt on the course.

▬ Teacher (1st Steps Games)

I loved the practical aspects of the course and that we got to ‘do’ rather than just listen.

▬ Subject Leader (PE and …)

Golf and Maths – as maths co-ordinator it was great to see how the golf could be used as part of a maths lessons.

These courses are aimed at developing the skills and knowledge of the PE Co-ordinator and Senior Management with regards to improving the quality of teaching and learning within PE and sport. The objectives of these courses are to assist in the development of a PE curriculum that inspires and motivates students to be physically active and to establish a culture of high expectations with ambitious goals.

These courses are aimed at both NQTs who are looking to develop and build on their knowledge of teaching PE and also experienced teachers looking for a refresher course.  There is a series of courses including safe teaching, gymnastics, dance, games (Invasion, Net and Striking & Fielding) and athletics.

These courses are designed to develop teachers’ knowledge of specific areas of PE which can then help further develop the PE curriculum in their school.  These include Physical Literacy, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Inclusive PE

These are short afternoon or twilight courses on specific sports.  These courses are aimed at giving teachers and teaching assistants the opportunity to participate in the sport and gain a greater understanding of teaching it, the rules and how to officiate.  They are designed as a confidence booster for staff.
